Easter is one long weekend of nothing but chocolate. Chocolate! Chocolate! Chocolate!
So it’s hardly a surprise when you succumb to the temptation of a crème egg (and a Rolo egg, and some Smarties and…).
But if you do and we all do, eat the egg and then follow our 5 top tips to keep a balance.
Dark chocolate is not as bad for you as milk chocolate. So choose wisely, the better quality choccy, the better it is for you, go for 60% or higher and take advantage of those bigger antioxidant numbers.
Save it for Afters
During Easter, it’s absolutely OK to wake up and reach for an egg before you’ve opened your eyes or turned off your alarm. Unfortunately, if you haven’t had some protein first, chocolate will raise blood sugar levels, setting you off on a careering energy-spiked dodgem car.
Have your breakfast first.
Good things, small packages
A study found recently that normally, healthy adults who consume small amounts of chocolate often, incline toward a lower BMI than people who never eat chocolate. The important thing is moderation, small and often wins the race, or is that some other bunny metaphor?
Hollow eggs of 200g have on average 1050kcals of nutritional value made up of; 115g of sugar & 55g of fat.
That is a whopping 128% RDA of sugar and 84% of fat, and that’s without an additional bar of chocolate. 1 Mars bar, for instance, has an extra 260kcals (of which 35g sugar/10g fat).
Become a Prepper
Become a Prepper, but without the bothersome zombies, stock up on healthy alternatives to confectionary, ones that will still gratify your hankerings for sweeties, things like fruit dunked in molten dark chocolate.
Keep a diary too. Latest studies revealed that people tracked their intake lost double the amount as those that didn’t.
Be Gentle with Yourself
Falling off the waggon, won’t hurt as much if it’s a small waggon. Easter is an annual event and it is actually OK to have a little something. Research suggests, if you try to ignore your sweet cravings, you are more likely to overeat.
